Our contribution to sustainability

As part of its commitment to sustainable and responsible business, Coesia integrates the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development into its strategies and activities:

  • innovating its industrial solutions by increasingly environmentally sustainable packaging;
  • reducing its environmental impact through short- and medium- to long-term decarbonization targets and a diversified energy strategy;
  • committing to attracting and developing the best talent and investing in their personal and professional growth;
  • continuing to pay close attention to the health, safety and well-being of its employees;
  • working with its suppliers to promote a value chain that respects the same ESG commitments as Coesia;
  • continuing to support social innovation initiatives such as Fondazione MAST and Fare Impresa in Dozza (FID);
  • confirming its focus on ethics, compliance with the law, and an accurate reporting system.
ECoesia

ECOESIA sustainable solutions

The Group created a Sustainability Expertise Center with the goal of strategically investing in the research and development of packaging solutions, products and services for its customers that combine innovation, high performance, and eco-sustainability.

Coesia is committed to ensuring its packaging equipment is able to run 100% recyclable materials and to reduce energy consumption, water consumption, and CO₂ emissions while minimizing waste. Thanks to their vast experience in paper-based packaging, the Group's packaging specialists co-develop alternative solutions alongside customers, allowing them to replace less sustainable materials and to optimize the overall packaging size.

Environment

Coesia recognizes the importance of safeguarding the natural environment and is committed to monitoring its impacts by identifying specific mitigation measures through the constant improvement of processes and the introduction of new technologies.
The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy expresses the Group's commitment to environmental protection and defines the reference requirements for environmental management at all sites, incorporating compliance with applicable regulations and continuous improvement of performance as essential components.
Coesia has started a process of implementing Environmental Management Systems certified in accordance with ISO 14001:2015 in its operating sites, with the aim of covering at least 80% of the Group's population by 2028.

Commitment to reducing greenhouse gases

The path towards decarbonization represents a core component of Coesia's commitment to a sustainable future and is in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Coesia has joined the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) with the aim of validating its greenhouse gas reduction objectives by 2025: namely, to achieve carbon neutrality (GHG scope 1-2) and a 25% reduction (GHG scope 3) by 2030, and net zero by 2050.

To support the Group's objectives, an energy strategy has been defined. This strategy will focus on reducing direct and indirect emissions on the carbon footprint associated with the value chain and on developing innovative technologies to allow for increasingly efficient use of energy in the industrial solutions produced.

Key points of the energy strategy

Maximize the use of renewable energy

In order to actively contribute to the energy transition, Coesia is implementing a plan to install photovoltaic systems on its sites: it reached an installed power of 13.3 MW in 2023 and aims to reach 20 MW by 2027 and to source 100% of the electricity it uses from renewable sources by 2030.

Investments aimed at energy saving and the upgrading of production plants

  • Upgrade electrical systems to eliminate fossil fuels.
  • Replacing existing systems with energy-efficient systems.
  • Improving the energy performance of buildings through thermal insulation and shielding.
  • Extending continuous monitoring and control systems at sites with a view to the constant management of energy optimization actions.

E-mobility

Transitioning the vehicle fleet to electric and hybrid solutions with the introduction of a company policy that requires compliance with the WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) emission limit of 160g CO2/km for company fleet vehicles.

Health and Safety

The health, safety and well-being of employees and stakeholders are a priority for Coesia. The Group is constantly committed to guaranteeing safe and healthy working environments, by ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and implementing rigorous safety standards in all its activities. The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy expresses this commitment and defines the reference requirements for managing health and safety issues at all sites.
Coesia has started a process of implementing Health and Safety Management Systems certified in accordance with ISO 45001:2018 in its operational sites, with the aim of covering at least 85% of the Group's employees by 2028.

Relationship with suppliers and sustainable procurement

Coesia aims to responsibly manage the relationship with its suppliers by aligning with the values expressed in the Code of Ethics.  In turn, suppliers will adhere to the sustainability principles set out in the Supplier Code of Conduct by respecting and implementing the requirements expressed therein. This will allow sustainability and ethical behavior not only within Coesia but also among suppliers.

The Group is actively committed to monitoring the supply chain's adherence to these principles through qualification activities, pre-contractual verification, auditing, and risk analysis in order to evaluate the adoption of sustainability actions and thus guide its business choices.
The supplier engagement program includes:

  • by 2025, engagement of 100% of suppliers in the Group's sustainability programs through analysis and qualification activities with ESG criteria and information and support actions in pursuit of common sustainability objectives;
  • by 2026, participation in the attainment of Coesia's decarbonization objectives through the definition of specific targets and joint emission reduction programs;
  • by 2027, development of collaborative activities, with the most critical suppliers, relating to societal and environmental issues.

Social innovation

Coesia is involved in initiatives of social innovation such as Fondazione MAST (Manifattura di Arti, Sperimentazione e Tecnologia), founded by Isabella Seràgnoli, that integrates welfare services for Coesia employees with cultural offerings for the wider community, and Fare Impresa in Dozza (FID), a social enterprise founded with other companies and a foundation, operating within the Bologna prison to rehabilitate inmates.
